Danae and the Brazen Tower
Ashmolean Museum,
Oxford, England
Danae's father Acrisius was king of Argos. He had consulted an oracle that told him Danae would have a son who would kill him. He tried to avoid this by locking Danae in a tall brazen tower. Little did he imagine Zeus (also known as Jupiter) would visit Danae as a golden shower and leave her pregnant.
When she gave birth to Perseus, one of the greatest mythological heroes, her father cast them both out to sea in a wooden crate. They landed safely on the island of Seriphos and were taken in by a kind fisherman.
