Cupid was sent by his mother Aphrodite (also known as Venus) to kill an earthly beauty, named Psyche,  who had been involuntarily competing for the title of "the fairest." Cupid was so astonished by her beauty that he accidentally wounded himself with one of his own arrows. He fell deeply in love with Psyche and conspired to marry her.
